  • Kaspersky Source Code In the Wild

    mvar writes “The source code of an older version of ‘Kaspersky Internet Security’ has been circulated on the internet. The code was created in late 2007 and was probably stolen in early 2008. Names contained in the source indicate that the stolen code was probably a beta version of the 2008 software package – the current release is Kaspersky Internet Security 2011. So I organized a weekend workshop at the University of Pennsylvania. Total newbies enthusiastically spent the day on IRC, learned git, built a project from source, and read bugs in real projects. I learned that there’s no shortage of students that want to get involved.”

Highlights include a video of the id Tech 5 engine (aka Rage) running on the iPhone 4G at 60fps, with claims that it also runs on the iPhone 3GS.   • Aquaria Goes Open Source

    A post on the Wolfire blog yesterday announced that the source code for Aquaria has now been released. Aquaria, an action-adventure, underwater sidescroller from Bit Blot, was part of the Humble Indie Bundle, which was so successful that the developers of four games pledged to release them as open source. This marks the final release, following Lugaru, Gish, and Penumbra: Overture. The source code is available from a Mercurial repository.

  • Google to Open Source the VP8 Codec

    Several reader noted Google’s reported intention to open source the VP8 codec it acquired with On2 last February — as the FSF had urged. “HTML5 has the potential to capture the online video market from Flash by providing an open standard for web video — but only if everyone can agree on a codec.
