Scientists Create World’s Tiniest “Ear”
By admin on January 16, 2012 | Comments Off
sciencehabit writes “If you’ve ever wondered what a virus sounds like, or what noise a bacterium makes when it moves between hosts, you may soon get your chance to find out. Scientists have created the world’s tiniest ear. The ‘nano-ear,’ a microscopic particle of gold trapped by a laser beam, can detect sound a million times fainter than the threshold for human hearing. Researchers suggest the work could open up a whole new field of ‘acoustic (more…)

Scientists Unveil Structure of Adenovirus
By admin on August 29, 2010 | Comments Off
An anonymous reader contributes this snippet from Medical News Daily, which begins a story of some interesting medical detective work: “After more than a decade of research, Scripps Research Institute scientists have pieced together the structure of a human adenovirus—the largest complex ever determined at atomic resolution. The new findings about the virus, which causes respiratory, eye, and gastrointestinal infections, may lead to more effective (more…)

Tornado Scientists Butt Heads With Storm Chasers
By admin on June 18, 2010 | Comments Off
An anonymous reader writes “Tornado researchers say amateurs — inspired by movies like Twister and shows like Storm Chasers — are getting in their way, hampering science and creating hazards. ‘Hundreds of camera-toting amateurs in cars ended up chasing the same storms as a fleet of scientific vehicles during the high-profile research project, called Vortex2, which wrapped up data collection this week. At times the line of traffic caused (more…)

Scientists Implant Biofuel Cells Into Rats
By admin on May 19, 2010 | Comments Off
RedmondChris writes “A team of scientists from Joseph Fourier University in France have successfully implant biofuel cells into rats, generating 6.5 microwatts by harnessing the power of glucose. From the article: ‘The device uses enzymes to harvest energy from glucose and oxygen found naturally in the body. Past attempts at using such a device in animals have failed because the enzymes have required acidic conditions or were inhibited by charged (more…)

Scientists Discover How DNA Is Folded Within the Nucleus
By admin on October 15, 2009 | Comments Off
mikael writes “Sciencedaily.com is reporting that scientists have discovered how DNA is folded within the nucleus of a cell such that active genes remain accessible without becoming tangled. The first observation is that genes are actually stored in two locations. The first location acts as a cache where all active genes are kept. The second location is a denser storage area where inactive genes are kept. The second observation is that all genes are (more…)

Scientists Find Master Gene To Switch On Immune Cells
By admin on September 14, 2009 | Comments Off
Scientists claim to have identified a master gene which is able to transform blood stem cells into disease-fighting immune cells. The hope is that this discovery will allow for new treatments for cancer. “The researchers have ‘knocked out’ the gene in question, known as E4bp4, in a mouse model, creating the world’s first animal model entirely lacking NK cells, but with all other blood cells and immune cells intact. This breakthrough model should help (more…)
