Senate Passes Landmark Patent Reform Bill
By admin on March 9, 2011 | Comments Off
inkscapee writes “The US Senate is congratulating itself for passing a ‘landmark’ piece of patent reform legislation. Some key elements are ‘first to file’ instead of first to invent, and ending fee diversion, which means fees paid to the Patent Office will actually fund the Patent Office. Curiously, this practice has resulted in a backlog of 700,000 patent applications. The House is reportedly working on a similar bill, and soon harmony and rationality (more…)

Google Nabs Patent To Monitor Your Cursor Movement
By admin on July 28, 2010 | Comments Off
bool2 writes “Google has been awarded a patent for displaying search results based on how you move your mouse cursor on the screen… Google’s plans are to monitor the movements of the cursor, such as when a user hovers over a certain ad or link to read a tooltip, and then provide relevant search results, and ads, based on that behaviour. It means that it does not require users to actually click a link to know that they were interested in it, opening (more…)

Company Claims Patent On Spam Filtering, Sues World
By admin on July 24, 2010 | Comments Off
EvilAlphonso notes news of a “Texas” IP holding company suing 36 actual companies for violating its claimed patent on spam filtering. Techdirt deconstructs the patent itself, No. 6,018,761, which seems to amount to little more than a database lookup. It was filed in 1996 and issued in 2000 (despite the lawyers’ press release claiming that it “was awarded… nearly 15 years ago”). Among the companies being sued are 3Com, Apple, Google, AOL, Yahoo, (more…)

Stem Cell Patent Halts Hospital’s Collection
By admin on May 24, 2010 | Comments Off
eldavojohn writes “It’s a classic case that comes up when dealing with patents. A hospital’s research on the donated brains of deceased children has been in limbo for three years because of a challenge from a patent holder. The double-edged sword of patents that spurred investment into the field will also cause chilling effects on research like the case of the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. They’ve now been forced to shift the money from the (more…)

Google Awarded Broad Patent For Location-Based Advertising
By admin on March 1, 2010 | Comments Off
Mashable has a report of a patent that just issued (6-1/2 years after filing) — apparently Google now has a lock on location-based advertising. It’s not clear that the search company intends to assert the patent against any other companies (such as emerging rival Apple), but it’s useful as leverage. Here is the patent.

Professor Sohi developed technology that was ultimately patented by WARF using money he received from Intel.
