ESA’s GOCE Satellite Provides Gravity Map of Earth
By admin on June 28, 2010 | Comments Off
kaulike writes “The European Space Agency’s GOCE satellite, launched in March 2009, has provided a spectacular, highly detailed map of our favorite gravity well. This map shows the normalized surface of the earth as defined by gravity, showing the relative altitude differences from the average for each surveyed point. The article provides the helpful metaphor that a ball resting on this surface would not roll anywhere, even though there would be visual (more…)

New Theory of Gravity Decouples Space & Time
By admin on November 24, 2009 | Comments Off
eldavojohn writes “Petr Horava, a physicist at the University of California in Berkeley, has a new theory about gravity and spacetime. At high energies, it actually snips any ties between space and time, yet at low energies devolves to equivalence with the theory of General Relativity, which binds them together. The theory is gaining popularity with physicists because it fits some observations better than Einstein’s or Newton’s solutions. It better (more…)
